When Were Vinyl Wraps Invented?
Although they weren't full vehicle wraps, vinyl for cars goes as far back as the 1950s. As seen in this original 1954 ad, vinyl was originally offered as decals in various patterns to add a unique look to the roof, trunk, doors and more:
Many auto manufacturers have offered these kinds of decals over the years. However, it was the advertising business that really started utilizing full vehicle wraps - Companies would wrap cars and buses to promote a new product or service.
In 1993, a German taxi company was looking for an alternative to painting a new fleet of taxis as they were required by law to have all of their taxis be the same color - beige. They hired UK-based Kay Premium Marking Films (KPMF) to create a film that could be used in place of paint to save on costs. Once it was discovered that vinyl wraps would leave the original paint underneath unscathed, auto detailers saw the potential and started offering vinyl wraps as an alternative to getting new paint, thereby helping keep the resale value.
As time has gone on, new, more durable variations of film and vinyl have become available to offer styles like matte and chrome, among others. Capitol Shine is proud to continue the legacy with our selection of vinyl wraps and paint protection films.
